Zcherina (pronounced Shur - ee - nuh) is a freshman at the University of Wyoming. She is studying both English as well as Anthropology. Zcherina is from Cheyenne, Wyoming, but her family is of Filipino heritage. Zcherina told me that her grandmother was an immigrant from the Philippines who moved to the United States and built a life here. Zcherina says that her Filipino heritage is a huge part of her identity and who she has become over the years. During our interview, Zcherina showed me her apartment and the little aspects throughout the space that make up who she is.

Lumpia

Lumpia is a Filipino food that is made of vegetables and meat rolled up. Lumpia can be eaten as a snack or as a meal and is often brought to Filipino potlucks. The Lumpia in the picture is a vegetarian kind but normally Lumpia contains either pork or beef. Zcherina's mom made this Lumpia for her to eat throughout the week. Zcherina explained that making Lumpia is a fairly long process. In her family, her mom cooks the filling of the Lumpia while her dad does the wrapping and frying.

  • Rice Cooker

This rice cooker is something that Zcherina's mom saved for her for a long time. Zcherina's mom bought this rice cooker when she was young and then saved it for when Zcherina moved away for college. Zcherina told me about how her dad taught her to use the rice cooker using only her fingers so she doesn't have to use measuring cups. This is very convenient because Zcherina uses her rice cooker for almost every meal. She even taught her roommate how to use the rice cooker.

  • Movie Posters

Zcherina printed out movie posters at Office Depot to decorate her college bedroom with. She printed out 50 posters for 30 dollars. The poster that is the center of this picture is for the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once. This is Zcherina's favorite movie which is why she chose to make this poster a bit bigger than some of the other ones on her wall.

  • Music Posters

This picture portrays mostly music posters and is on the other wall opposite of the wall that has mostly movie posters. Some of these posters are from albums of her favorite artist, Fiona Apple. These posters help Zcherina express herself in her bedroom. Zcherina likes most genres of music but she mostly likes jazz, alternative, and hip-hop.

  • Telephone

Another decoration that Zcherina has on her desk is a green, old-school telephone. Zcherina got this phone from her grandmother's house when house phones started to go away in the transition to cell phones. Zcherina told me a story about how, when she was little, she accidentally used this phone to call 911, and the police showed up at her grandmother's house.

  • Filipiñana

Hanging on a rack next to her desk is Zcherina's Filipiñana. A Filipiñana is part of a traditional dress from the Philippines. Zcherina told me that the sleeves on this piece of clothing are called butterfly sleeves. Although this is a traditional Filipino dress, the butterfly sleeves were adopted after the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. Zcherina ordered this Filipiñana online straight from the Philippines to wear to a cultural event that she went to a while back.

  • Humidifier

In her bedroom, Zcherina has a humidifier sitting on an Ikea shelving unit. Zcherina has had this humidifier since she was a baby. Her parents made her take this humidifier with her when she moved for college because they were worried about her getting sick. Zcherina's parents text her often, asking her if she is using the humidifier like they told her to.

Cameras

This is another shelf on the same Ikea unit as the humidifier. This shelf displays Zcherina's various cameras that she has collected over the years. Zcherina said that the first camera on the left is a camcorder that was her parents in the 2000s. They let Zcherina have the camcorder when they no longer wanted it. The middle, blue camera is one that was gifted to Zcherina by a friend when she graduated high school. The last camera is a vintage camera that was her grandmother's back in the day. Zcherina wants to get into photography soon.

  • Bats

Bats are Zcherina's favorite animal. Zcherina doesn't really know when she started to love bats but that she has loved them since she was a child. In her bedroom, she has a bunch of different bat items on display. In the photo, there are four posters of bats and bat anatomy on the wall. Under these posters, Zcherina displays a book called Stellaluna, which is a book about a bat. Zcherina's friend gifted her this book last year for her birthday because she knew how much Zcherina loves bats. It can't be seen from this photo but on another table in her room, Zcherina displays a few small bat plushies which add to her overall bat collection.

  • Books

Zcherina explained why she had two copies of the same book. It was written by a UW Alumni and that she had to read it for one of her honors classes. The author of the book did a book signing event which Zcherina attended. However, she forgot to bring the book with her. The honors college gave Zcherina another copy of the book to get signed which is why she now has two. Zcherina plans on giving one of the copies to her sister as a gift.
